We are excited to share vital information regarding the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer. This initiative is particularly important as it seeks to address the heightened risk of cancer that firefighters face due to their exposure to hazardous materials while on duty. Currently, we have nearly 200 members signed up from the Denver Fire Department (DFD), but we have the potential to significantly increase this number. Our goal is to reach between 500 and 600 members registered, which would not only enhance our representation but also strengthen our collective voice in advocating for health and safety. It is crucial to emphasize that there is absolutely NO REASON why any member should refrain from signing up. Participation is not just beneficial; it is essential for our community's well-being.

All active and retired members are encouraged to sign up as well as those with and without a current or past cancer diagnosis. The registry relies upon ALL firefighters to sign-up to come to conclusions about reducing cancer rates in our profession.

Sign Up Today for the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer (NFR for Cancer)!

The NFR for Cancer was established in April 2023 by Congress through the Firefighter Cancer Registry Act of 2018. The World Health Organization has classified firefighting as a Group I Carcinogen—meaning there is clear evidence that occupational exposure as a firefighter causes cancer in humans.

What’s not yet fully understood is how and why our work increases cancer risk. The National Firefighter Registry for Cancer is the key to finding those answers. By participating, you’ll help researchers gather the data needed to reduce cancer in the fire service—protecting both today’s firefighters and future generations.

So far, more than 32,000 firefighters have signed up, but the goal is 200,000+ participants. Local 858 can make a major impact in reaching that goal!

The sign-up process takes less than 5 minutes.
After signing up, you’ll be asked to complete a questionnaire (20–40 minutes, depending on your years of service and exposure history). You can fill it out later at your convenience and choose how much information to share.

The most important step is to sign up today.
